Some baffling words and aronyms explained

Ablation - destruction or removal by some external means

Affective disorder - a psychological illness showing emotional disturbances.

Afferent - going into, coming towards, arriving at.

DBS - Deep brain stimulation, a therapy which targets subcortical regions, such as the thalamus and basal ganglia.

Capacitor - something that can store electrical charge from a potential passed across it, increasing its resitance as charge accumilates, and releasing the charge once the potential across it is removed.

Cephalic - of or relating to the head.

Codec - is an abbreviation for Code-Decode. It refers to a hardware or software logic algorithm that exchanges data between two objects, synchronously translating it to an appropriate format.

Efferent - going from, moving away, leaving.

Electrolyte - a liquid medium containing dissolved molecules and ion, including the fluid found in the body between cells.

ESB - Electrical stimulation of the brain, using guided electrodes.

Faradaic - reffering to Micheal faraday, a pioneer in research into electricity.

Haemorrhage - internal bleeding.

Idiot savant - someone who is underdeveloped in ways typically present i most people (i.e. communication or social skills), but has some exceptional mental skills beyond the scope of normal human ability (i.e. mathmatical genius or photographic memory)

Intrathecal - denotes application into the spinal fliud

Monophasic - consisting of a single change - i.e. a current flows in one direction only.

Neurite - any kind of extension of the neural cell body, including axons (signal outputs) and dendrites (signal inputs)

Sated - satisfied fully or to excess.

Stochastic - A stochastic process is one whose behavior is non-deterministic in that the next state of the environment is not fully determined by the previous state of the environment.

Vagus nerve - a large nerve that carries autonomic signals from the CNS into most of the rest of the body. It is the major parasympathetic outlet of the brain, controlling functions of the heart, lungs, pancreas, gall bladder, stomach and gut.

VGCC - voltage gated calcium channel, a protein in cell membranes that regulates flow of calcium ions through detection of relative electrostatic charge on either side of the membrane.

VGSC - voltage gated sodum channel, as above.

Waveform - literally the nature of a pulse of electrical charge. 'Wave-form' describes the shape seen on an occiloscope when detecting changes in potential, it's kind of wavey.
